Can you land your dream job?

mac-459196_1280From a very young age, most of us have a few ideas of what we would say our dream job would be. Typical jobs include Vet, Actor / Singer or Doctor. Often
over time our ideas tend to change and often we may even get swept in to a job that we don’t really want. This may be due to financial commitments, taking over in a family business or simply not getting the qualifications needed to carry on down our dream career path.

Regardless of what job you are in, it doesn’t have to be forever and you should always remember that you may have the opportunity to change career paths in your future. Some careers are extremely hard to get in to. Acting for example, is an extremely competitive industry and often people wishing to get in to it have to take other jobs whilst looking for acting work.

What qualifications do you need to be a make-up artist?

Becoming a make-up artist can be a dream job, glamorous, fairly well paid and means you get to travel around on a daily basis.

Many people start by taking a course in NVQ level 2/3 Beauty therapy then choose to specialise in make-up and take further specialist courses. You can however skip straight to the make-up specific courses such as Fashion and photographic make-up or bridal make-up.makeup-brushes-824706_1280

You can take a HND, Higher National Diploma, in these subjects and this would be advisable if you want to learn more advanced make-up for use theatrically including working with prosthetics and special effects.

Once you gain your qualification you’ll need to get in as much experience as possible practising of friends and family to take photos and put together you own portfolio of work to show to a potential employer.

It’s a great job and can be really versatile depending where you want to work.

Recruiting new staff – what to look for

When you are looking for new members of staff it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what qualities would make a good employee, putting together a job specification for the role can help you to figure these things out.

In the specification you will need to list key responsibilities and task that will need to be carried out as part of the role. You will also need to list desired and essential qualification that you would expect a suitable candidate to have.manager-308474_640

Once you start to receive applications and CVs the first thing to look for is matches with the job role, i.e previous similar experience and relevant qualifications that are required.

Once you have narrowed down suitably qualified applicants you can then go through their personal statements and look for clues to their personality and work ethics, this can be quite challenging to get a good view of just from a personal statement alone so you would usually at this point offer an interview to the candidate.

At interview you should be able to get a good idea of what the person is like and often it’s best to go with your gut feeling, it’s important to find someone who will fit into the company and work hard so don’t go to easy on those interview questions.

Finding the time to job hunt

job-search-276893_1280When you are in a job that you’re unhappy in it can feel like your trapped in a vicious cycle of going to work, having a bad day and coming home exhausted and deflated leaving you feeling like you have no energy to start the job hunting process.

For most people looking for a new job can be very daunting with the worries of writing your CV, filling in job application forms and attending interviews so it’s easy to put of the search, however if you are serious about wanting to change your job you’re going to have to put the work in.

The ideal thing would be to take some days holiday to be able to dedicate full days to looking for new positions however if your remaining days holiday are few keep in mind that you may need them at a later date to attend interviews.

If this is the case then its best to set yourself dedicated ‘job hunting’ time each evening, after you have had a rest and eaten your dinner allow yourself 45mins to search and apply for any jobs that you think look promising. Dedicating a specific amount of time means you are less likely to procrastinate and should be able to be quite productive during that period and it’ll all be worthwhile once you land your dream job.

Do you need a degree to get a ‘good’ job?

Sometimes it can seem as if attending university and obtaining a degree will guarantee you a good job once you graduate, however this certainly is not a guarantee in fact it’s getting harder and harder to get a job with or without a degree.

scroll-32278_640If you do choose to do a degree ensure that it is actually relevant to what you’d like to do for a career as just having any degree doesn’t particularly look that impressive on your CV.

Most employers are now more eager to know what experience you have for a role rather than how highly qualified you are as generally experience in a role is more transferable than studying it in a classroom.

Sometimes the best way to get a good job is to start off fairly low down the ladder as an apprentice, that way you get to study and get experience on the job at the same time and you’ll come out of the apprentice qualified but with more experience than someone who has just finished university.

There are obviously some jobs that require you to have a degree but it’s always worth checking if there’s another route to a qualification so you can weigh up your options.
